Clearing the Clutter

We’ve all been there. You sit down at your desk, ready to tackle the day’s work, and find a pile of old documents and office paraphernalia blocking your way. You shove it off to the side impatiently, only for it to come back and haunt you again the next day! If this sounds like your situation, it may be time to look at decluttering your workspace.

How Does Clutter Affect Your Health?

It’s always nice to have our daily tools at hand, but at what point does it become too much? Having a cluttered desk can have an impact on your mental wellness and productivity. You may find yourself overstimulated or constantly distracted. Your train of thought might get interrupted when you can’t find something you’re looking for. Too much clutter can also serve as an unpleasant reminder of all that you still have to do. If you’ve got a busy day ahead, the first thing you’ll be putting off is cleaning your desk, which only exacerbates the problem.

Maintaining a Clutter-Free Environment

Start to clean up your workspace by defining what “clean” looks like for you. One person’s clean may not necessarily be the same as another’s. In essence, a clean environment should be organized and streamlined such that you can find everything you are looking for while not impeding your productivity. An easy way to do this is to assign a “home” for everything. Ensure that your stapler, hole puncher, and folders all find their way back to their assigned spaces once you’re finished with them. It may take a little while to get used to your new system, but you’ll find that this saves you time in the long run. Once an organizational system is established, make sure you take a few minutes out of your day to keep things maintained. The laws of nature tell us that systems tend towards disorder if no work is put in, and your office desk is no exception! If you have a ton of clutter, it’ll take a decent amount of effort to get things organized at first. From then on, however, maintaining your clean space becomes a much more manageable task. Learn to detach yourself from old junk. Too often we hoard old items that are of no use to us. If you have something of sentimental value that you simply cannot bear to throw away, consider taking an image of it so you’re able to keep a part of it, then learn to let it go!
