The Better Business Bureau’s (BBB) rating system reflect the organization’s opinion of how a certain business can be expected to interact with its’ customers. A company’s rating is determined based on specific information obtained by the BBB directly from the company’s themselves, as well as from public data sources. This information typically pertains to the company’s overall business practices, including complaints received from the public.
The BBB assigns ratings on a scale from F at the low end to A+ at the highest. In the worst cases, the BBB will issue a company an ‘NR,’ which signifies ‘No Rating.’ Companies can receive ‘NR’ when there is insufficient information available or the BBB is conducting an ongoing review or update of the company’s file.
Although BBB ratings do not guarantee a specific business’ reliability or performance, the BBB recommends that consumers utilize their ratings system, in addition to other relevant information available, to make the most informed decision possible.
The BBB uses seven major factors to rate a business: the business’ complaint history, the type of business, amount of time in business, transparent business practices, failure to honor BBB commitments, licensing and government actions known to BBB, and advertising issues known to BBB.
There are also eight different ‘BBB Standards for Trust’ that accredited or member businesses are expected to adhere to: “Build Trust, Advertise Honestly, Tell the Truth, Be Transparent, Honor Promises, Be Responsive, Safeguard Privacy, and Embody Integrity.”
